233th Sarcoma Support Group Meeting


On 20th October 2024, the Sachin Sarcoma Society hosted its 233rd Sarcoma Support Group Meeting for patients and caregivers. Dr. Chitrakshi Nagpal, Senior Resident Doctor at AIIMS, New Delhi, led the session with an insightful presentation on managing the side effects of chemotherapy. The meeting focused on practical solutions for coping with various side effects experienced during cancer treatment.

Key topics discussed:

1.  Understanding Chemotherapy:
•   Overview of chemotherapy and its necessity in cancer treatment.
2.  Managing Common Side Effects:
•   Mouth sores and ulcers: Advice on maintaining oral health.
•   Nausea and vomiting: Remedies and medications to control nausea.
•   Diarrhea and constipation: Dietary tips and hydration techniques to balance digestive issues.
3.  Fever During Chemotherapy:
•   Fever during chemotherapy can be a medical emergency. Patients were advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience a fever above 100°F or one that lasts for more than two days.
4.  Hair Loss and Wigs:
•   Hair loss is common but temporary. Tips on using wigs and coping with hair loss were shared.
5.  Skin Toxicity, Pain, and Fatigue:
•   Guidance on managing skin irritation, pain, and body fatigue, common side effects during chemotherapy.
6.  Neutropenia:
•   A condition where the white blood cell count drops, increasing infection risk. Patients were urged to report any signs of fever or infection to their doctors immediately.
7.  Diet and Anemia:
•   Importance of maintaining a nutritious diet rich in iron (leafy greens, beetroot) to combat anemia during chemotherapy.
8.  Organ Toxicity:
•   Awareness of potential cardiac toxicity (for which dexrazoxane is recommended), as well as kidney, liver, and lung toxicities. Neurological side effects like tingling (neurotoxicity) were also discussed.
9.  Chemo Dos and Don’ts:
•   Avoid crowded places and maintain good physical hygiene.
•   Eat freshly prepared food, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid spicy, oily, or preserved foods.
•   Don’t miss follow-up appointments with doctors.
